The Sunrise Minute

Dear MSA Families,

It is hard to believe we have already completed a little more than a month of school! Our teachers and staff have worked incredibly hard to establish classroom rhythms, build meaningful relationships, and create engaging learning experiences for our students.

As we move forward, we remain committed to preserving the inspiration, creativity, and connection that make our Waldorf-inspired school special while emphasizing a strong focus on student achievement. Our teachers are using student data, strengthening instruction, and providing additional support to help every child grow in reading, writing, mathematics, and other essential skills.

There are many wonderful things happening throughout our school. Students are participating in classroom projects, music, movement, handwork, gardening, and other opportunities that bring learning to life. We are also excited about Forest Day and hope the weather cooperates so our students can fully enjoy these meaningful outdoor learning experiences.

Thank you for your patience with driveline as we continue working through the challenges created by nearby construction. Please help us keep everyone safe by following the established traffic pattern, driving slowly, remaining attentive, and following staff directions. Please do not pass other vehicles unless directed to do so. A few extra minutes of patience can make a significant difference in protecting our students, families, and staff

We are grateful for your continued support and partnership. It has been a strong beginning to the school year, and we are excited about the learning, growth, and memorable experiences still ahead.

Honoring the Whole Child as an Individual

Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Waldorf Education, envisioned an education that honored the whole child, writing, “We attach great importance to the development of children’s whole being—in spirit, soul, and body.” (RSArchive, GA 307, August 17, 1923) He also encouraged teachers to “progress from reading human nature in general to reading an individual human being.” (RSArchive, GA 308, April 10, 1924)

Our specialty classes support the whole child by nurturing creativity, movement, music, and connection with the natural world.

This year, as we consider how to intentionally support the child's intellect, we have introduced WIN (What I Need) time—a 45-minute period each day when children within each grade are grouped according to their skill level. This provides additional support when needed and greater challenge when each student is ready, allowing each child’s instruction to be as effective as possible.

Importantly this learning approach aligns with  modern day findings.  In this way, we are bringing together a foundational Waldorf principle with what contemporary research continues to teach us about how children learn best.
